I’ve been kinda keeping up with the Fury promotion. They have great talent down there in Houston. The atmosphere is good, but the judging is soooooo bad. You guys saw it at UFC 247. It can get down right horrible at times, and I really think there is legit corruption there. I cant prove it, but the scores just dont make any sense.
Main Event
Christian Lira vs Jacob Silva – Featherweight – Fury FC title
Round 1
Silva bounces well, throws some good single strikes. He backs up and rocks Lira with a flying knee and is able to get him down and beat him up. 🚩Silva wins by TKO
Flying knees seem to be the Kryptonite for wrestlers. I haven’t seen Silva in a while. He looks sharp, and he looks like he has some nice tools. I thought that I’d be seeing CJ Vergara fight for the title, but I was informed that he was injured. I think Vergara and Silva both have big fights coming up this summer.
Ricky Turcios vs Kaleb Petereit – Featherweight
Round 1
Petereit has some good stuff, but is not confident. Turcios takes him down and takes the back towards the end of the round.
Round 2
Petereit starts off boxing well Turcios makes some big striking mistakes and doesn’t get punished. Turcios is able to scramble on to Petereit’s back, and eventually locks in an armbar. 🚩 Turcios wins by submission.
Turcios didn’t look like the killer that I’ve always heard about. Petereit is….OK but he fights like a lamb. He strikes, and then he backs off and tries to see what his opponent is going to do. He’s like a passenger in the fight, when most times he needs to be the driver. This fight showed me that Petereit has an upside to his game, but he just cant put it together. To be honest, I wasn’t that impressed with Turcios’ performance either, but maybe it was the level of competition that put me off.
Nico Echeverry vs Derrick Ageday – 160
Round 1
Feeling out with Ageday just reacting. Ageday looks as if he injured his leg in one of the sequences.
Round 2
Ageday is fighting southpaw and not throwing the obvious kick to the body. Ageday gets dropped with a left hook and pounded out. 🚩 Echeverry wins by TKO
Ageday was fighting like he was injured and its a shame too, because Echeverry is a high work-rate, high action fighter. I think Echeverry has some holes in his game, but one thing- He is not lazy. I just wish he added a little more finesse and accuracy to his game.
Dulani Perry vs Casey Jones – 140
Round 1
Perry bounces around and grounds Jones for the majority of the round.
Round 2
Perry gets taken down and Casey reverses, then Dulani reverses
Round 3
Dulani holds Jones for all of the round. 🚩 Jones wins by Spit decision
Casey Jones got smothered, and the the Judges decided to rob Dulani. I dont have a dog in the fight here. I’m not a fan of either guy. Dulani just got robbed. A judge had it 30-27 for Casey Jones. Dulani absolutely won the first round. I just sense that there is some foul-play here.
David Armas vs Carlos Melara – Lightweight
Round 1
Melara gets a takedown and it gets reversed. Melara looks good off his back and threatens with an armbar.
Round 2
Melara starts going forward with no regard for his chin. He take’s Armas’ back and does some damage
Round 3
Melara is deciding not to cut the cage off and is just following Armas around and beating him with toughness. 🚩 Melara wins by unanimous decision.
I like Carlos Melara. I’ve seen him a few times now. The man has got skills. Yes, he’s tough, but man, he’s trying to prove he’s tough in every fight -I’m not a fan of that. I really really like his Jiu Jitsu game, and I think its improving too. He’s a very exciting fighter coming out of Houston.
Paris Moran vs Francisco Obando – Bantamweight
Round 1
Obando is able to attack Moran eat some elbows and lock in the RNC. 🚩 Obando wins by submission.
Here I was thinking that this was going to be a Paris Moran showcase. Obando showed me something just a little different. He had to eat some elbows for it, but he gets a nice win. Paris Moran learns a lesson here. I’m excited to see where both guys go from here.
Rusty Turley vs Luke Crawford – Lightweight
Round 1
Turley lands some sharp strikes on the feet, and rocks Crawford. He then jumps on him and pounds on him. 🚩 Turley wins by TKO
Good performance by Rusty Turley. Very patient work to get, the right strikes at the right time to get the finish. He’s looked very good after going pro. I’ll definitely keep an eye on him
Tyson Williams vs Shane Sobnosky – Middleweight
Round 1
Williams gets some takedown and is looking good
Round 2
Grapplefest with Sobnosky having the better positions
Round 3
Williams slowed down. Sobnosky takes over in this grapplefest. 🚩 Sobnosky wins by unanimous decision
I am so happy to see a good Middleweight bout in Texas. Middleweight is such an empty division here. Sobnosky is talent. What makes him talent? His high work-rate. He make technical mistakes, but he corrects those mistakes by just out-working his opponents, he did that today with that jacked Tyson Williams. I’d really like to see him develop a Good offensive Jiu Jitsu game to match his good wrestling. He’s one to watch. Williams is also a good prospect, but I dont know if being too jacked can be a bad thing. He needs to hit the wrestling room just a little more and be more technical in the wrestling area.
Paul Garza vs Christopher Miller – 160
Round 1
Miller comes out throwing lots of combos. There is a lot of action and Garza has an iron chin
Round 2
Miller gets some good takedowns
Round 3
Miller is gassed, Garza is gassed. Millers still looking better than Garza. 🚩 Garza wins by split decision.
I think Miller won
Rashaad Robinson vs Jonathan Davis – Featherweight
Round 1
Good kicks from Robinson. Davis catches Robinson in a guillotine at the end of the round.
Round 2
Davis rocks Robinson with an over hand left and finishes it on the ground. 🚩 Davis wins by TKO
Early days for these guys
Arturo Tanguma vs Michael Aswell – Featherweight – Ammy Title
Round 1
Aswell clinches with Tanguma and eats some knees
Round 2
Aswell clinches with Tanguma and eats some knees
Round 3
Aswell cliches and eats knees. A lot of wall and stall
Round 4
Tanguma is winning on the feet and Aswell closes the distance. Puts him on the wall.
Round 5
Grapplefest. Tanguma seems like he doesn’t like pressure. Its like he has a problem fighting guys that are up close. 🚩 Aswell wins by split decision.
Strange fight. I thought Tanguma won. This one however was a little closer. I’m not blown away
Zach Lowery vs Taylor Hickman – Lightweight – Ammy Title
Round 1
Good stuff from both. Feeling out, Lowery clinches and eats some knees
Round 2
Not a lot of volume by both. Extremely stiff on the feet
Round 3
Some grappling, with Taylor grabbing a guillotine at the end. 🚩 Zach Lowery wins by split decision.
I think it was the wrong decision. Hickman won this fight
Juan Zamudio vs Isaac Moreno – Welterweight Ammy Title
Round 1
Zamudio runs up fends off a side kick and gets Moreno down. He goes to mount, Moreno is able to buck his hips and turn his back and get Zamudio off. Moreno then crushes Zamudio with a big over hand right, and finishes him on the ground. 🚩 Moreno wins by TKO
Both of these guys were huge. I know they are Welterweights, but I’m sure that both of them were well over 185 for this this fight. Zamudio was taller and a little more rangier than Moreno, but that didn’t stop the man from landing a beautiful overhand and putting his opponent down. I’ve seen all of Moreno’s fights and this is the second bit of adversity I’ve seen him face, and he dealt with it well. The man is insanely accurate. Sometimes he switches between a point-fighting stance and a regular stance. He fights smart and tries not to take damage, but dont get it twisted he has a dog in him, and it comes out when he needs it. Another scary thing about Moreno is that the man seems to have fun in there. The whole process just seems fun for him. If someone is having fun and getting better at the same time, only success can come from that. I’m a big fan.
OK Where do we go from here? Moreno is now the Ammy Fury Welterweight Champ. He can defend the belt, or he can move up to pro. -I dont think it makes any sense to defend the belt personally, because all the good talent have already gone pro, and the Ammys aren’t on his level. Welterweight is one of the deepest divisions in Texas right now. One of the best Welterweights in the country (Anthony Ivy) just happens to be the Fury FC champ. There are a lot of talented Welterweights in North Texas as well. I’m curious to see how Moreno starts off his pro career
Andrew Spencer vs Jake Williams – Heavyweight – Ammy title
Round 1
Williams clinches and eats a lot of knees
Round 2
Spencer clinches and gets the takedown
Round 3
Spencer clinches, gets the takedown and beats up Williams on the floor. The ref stops it. 🚩 Spencer wins by TKO
This is Spencer’s first Ammy fight, and first title fight, and he beat the very dominant Jake Williams. I thought Williams was going to take this one for sure, when I saw the fight on paper, but Williams looked bigger and Slower than I’m used to seeing him. -I think that cost him this fight
Cameron Smotherman vs Curry Gaut – Bantamweight
Round 1
Being Jamaican myself, Curry Gaut, is the most hilarious name anyone could ever have. Anyway Gaut glues himself to Smotherman and then eats some knees. Smotherman then follows him to the floor and finishes him with strikes. 🚩 Smotherman wins by TKO
I like Smotherman a lot, he is very defensively-technical, and he is very good at being the nail. I saw this in his last fight (which I thought he won). He has great defensive Jiu Jitsu, and great defensive knees. When he transitions from defense to offense I become a raving fan of the man. I’ll be keeping my eye on him.
Tony Toro vs Adrian Munoz – Featherweight
Round 1
They slug on the feet. Not a lot of power by either guy
Round 2
Toro lands some body shots and gets the takedown. High pace from both fighters.
Round 3
Munoz is starting to looks a little ragged and Toro is just doing a little more work. 🚩 Toro wins by unanimous decision
Early days for Toro
Christian Lopez vs Luis Banda
-I didn’t get to see this fight, because something was wrong with the broadcast 🚩 Lopez wins by submission
Isaac Moreno was unbroken
