So Fury FC is trying to do something a little UFCish. They’re trying to go with “Fight nights” and not number all their events, it looks like. I don’t like it. I say, number all your events, it makes it so easy to reference.
One thing with these promotions is, sometimes the fights can be surprising, I.e. Vergara fought Emerson Gutierrez instead of Christian Lira. Is it a case of the old bate and switch? Promotions tend to do that sometimes. I don’t know if this was the case.
Anyway, the crowd packed into Cowboys Dance hall in San Antonio to feel the fury.
Main Event
Emerson Guerrero vs CJ Vergara – Flyweight
Round 1
Emerson is from Chute Boxe, but Vergara has a Chute Boxe style himself. Both fighters are quick and it is an evenly matched first round.
Round 2
Vergara starts imposing his will and using his knees and punches to the body. He beats Guerrero down and pounds him out. π©Vergara wins by TKO
CJ Vergara was very impressive in this fight. I can see why he’s a main event type of fighter. He just brought the fight to his opponent and pummeled him. The kicks and the shots to the body were devastating, and he sprawled to avoid the takedown. A very tidy professional performance. Its a massive improvement from the last time I saw him
David Miramontes vs Ramiro Ruiz – Flyweight
Round 1
Miramontes takes Ruiz down. Miramontes DDTs himself in the slam and ends up in a guillotine. π© Ruiz wins by submission
Ruiz just took advantage of his opponent’s aggressiveness
Frank Garcia vs Kaleb Petereit – Bantamweight
Round 1
Garcia wants none of it. Petereit comes in and leg kicks Garcia, who looks like someone forced him into this fight. He eats a body kick, and a second leg kick from Petereit puts him down. π© Petereit wins by TKO
Frank Garcia was just afraid. It was bad. Easy payday for Petereit.
Warren Stewart vs Justin Governale 150 lbs
Round 1
Governale gets the takedown, and Stewart cant get up. Stewart gets beat down, and the stupid ref decides to stand them up. Why would you stand up a fighter that is not even trying to get to his feet. Governale had Stewart’s legs grapevined as was beating him. Anyway Governale takes Stewart down again and beats him up on the ground
Round 2
Stewart gets a takedown, and does some work. Governale gets back to his feet and starts to beat up his opponent, and the ref stands them up again. Stewart shoots in and gets in on a tight guillotine as the round ends.
Round 3
Governale gets the take down and starts to beat up Stewart. He takes the back and starts punching Stewart in the head, and Stewart begins to punch himself in the head. π© Governale wins by unanimous decision.
Stewart is not a real fighter. He’s a spectacle, an MMA clown-at least in this fight. Winning is so important to fighters that, whenever you’re a fighter that doesn’t care about winning, to me, you’re just a spectacle. Governale is a solid fighter with good wrestling. He needs to work on his standup. The bald headed ref at the event was garbage
Alonso Sanchez vs Josh Rosen – Featherweight
Round 1
They clinch, with Sanchez in the dominant position and they actually wait for the ref to break them up. Sanchez takes Rosen down and beats him up Kabib style.
Round 2
They clinch and Rosen is willing to eat knees up against the cage for a while. The ref separates them and they get back together. A lot of phonebooth fighting.
Round 3
They clinch, Sanchez takes Rosen down. Half guard beatdown ensues with Sanchez giving out the beatings. π© Sanchez wins by unanimous decison.
I’m impressed with Sanchez, he had a game plan and stuck to it. I’d like to see him advance his wresting game. His ground and pound looks weak. He should be more devastating on the ground. I’d also like to see him add something like a head and arm choke to his repertoire to enhance his ground game. Rosen wasn’t fighting a very smart fight. I feel like he gave Sanchez no resistance.
Joshua Neely vs Marcell Mickens – Featherweight
Round 1
Neely takes Mickens down then gets caught in a triangle and finished. Mickens wins by submission.
Mickens is a wild man. He looked tricky off his back. I didnt learn much about either guy from this fight.
Mark Ibarra vs Edward Fraire
Round 1
Fraire knocks Ibarra down and then pounds him out. π© Fraire wins by TKO
It was way too easy. Learned that Fraire can finish the fight early, but that’s about it. I cant tell if this was the same Fraire I saw at Fury FC 32. If it was him, he’d have made massive improvements
Sijin Kurian vs Jonathan Enriquez – Flyweight
Round 1
Sijin’s nickname is dirty Aladdin, which is hilarious. Anyway he gets taken down, his back taken, and pounded on hard. The ref should’ve shopped the fight, but the round comes to an end.
Round 2
Kurian gets taken down, and beaten up. Enriquez gets into a high half guard and starts to throw bombs, He works to lock up an arm and hits a Kimura on Kurian. π© Enriquez wins by submission.
Kurian offered no resistance. Sijin Kurian has a very long way to go. Enriquez looked as good as a hot knife through butter might look.
The Fury FC Ammy lineup
Jay Gonzales vs Oscar Martinez – Welterweight
Round 1
They clinch and Gonzales gets a big takedown and goes into Martinez’s guard. They go back to the feet and Martinez gets his back taken as the round ends.
Round 2
Gonzales gets a big takedown and Martinez is able to scramble out of it and take his opponents back and sink in the RNC. π© Martinez wins by submission.
The fight was going so great for Gonzales until it was not. Martinez didn’t show a lot.
Jaxon Parks vs Richard Palacios – Featherweight
Round 1
Palacios is looking to take the fight to Parks. He has good footwork and takes Parks down. Parks is able to reverse position to end up on top and land some shots.
Round 2
Palacios is being first, and Parks is looking to counter. Parks gets taken down and pounded on.
Round 3
Palacios is looking fresher and is bouncing well and throwing good kicks. He clinches and takes Parks down. Palacios goes to full mount and pounds on him until the round ends. π© Palacios wins by unanimous decision.
Palacios looked very good. In fact one of the things I think he may need to work on is patience. He needs to look at some of his opponent’s habits and capitalize on them. Its a big part of the mental game. He needs to work on his ground and pound and Jiu Jitsu, but I think he has a high ceiling, especially if he goes pro and gets to use his elbows. Parks has a very long way to go.
Rolando Gomez vs. Randy Scott
Round 1
Scott looks wolf-like, but is getting nailed on the feet. Scott is able to grab a quick clinch and take the back and lock in the rear naked choke. π© Randy Scott wins by submission.
I like how Scott looked. He just has the poise of a Martial Artist that can mess your world up. I’d like to see him work on some Muay Thai. His kick game could compliment his ground game. I’ll be following him.
Jake Williams vs Sterling Smoak – Heavyweight
Round 1
Smoak is 6’8 and Williams doesn’t care. He’s 6’4 himself and is throwing with bad intentions. The round is very even with both fighters throwing a lot of volume, and Smoak landing more kicks.
Round 2
Williams is gassed and Smoak is beginning to use his reach. Williams blitzes to get on the inside ever so often to get some shots in.
Round 3
Both guys are sucking air. Smoak lands a head kick and then gets taken down. Williams gets some shots in and Smoak cants seem to get up. The round ends with Williams in full mount. π© Williams wins by unanimous decision.
I think Smoak needs to develop a wrestling game. In modern MMA, wrestling is a must, and I didnt see any of it from him. Williams looks good. He might need to drop some pounds and move down to light-heavyweight. Williams does seem to have some cardio issues – But he’s very impressive for an amateur
Brandon Gutierrez vs Jheh Chow – Flyweight
Round 1
Gutierrez rocks Chow with a left and makes him do the chicken dance. The rocks him again and sits him down. The referee comes in and stop the fight. -Maybe the stoppage was a bit too quick. But they take extra care with the Amateurs. π© Gutierrez wins by TKO
There was no resistance here. For some reason Chow thought that he could swing with Gutierrez. The only thing I learned in this fight is that Gutierrez is pretty accurate, and Chow has a ton of heart.
Justin Hoffart vs Sean Cantu – Lightweight
Round 1
Cantu shoots and gets the takedown. Hoffart gets up and hits some knees as they clinch against the cage. Hoffart seems to be doing more damage in the clinch.
Round 2
Hoffart throws kicks some kicks and gets taken down, he gets to his feet and gets taken down again. He then reverses the position. He looks gassed.
Round 3
They clinch, and the ref separates them for some reason. Cantu gets a takedown and finishes on top. π© Hoffart wins by split decison.
Both guys need work. Hoffart has gas tank issues. Cantu is willing to stay in bad positions. Both guys are true amateurs.
David Linares vs Joe Perez – Strawweight
Round 1
This is actually my first time seeing a male Strawweight fight, and it wasnt bad. Linares drops Perez with some crisp boxing, then goes for a guillotine. Perez scrambles out of the submission and beats him up on the ground. Linares uses a heel hook to get back to his feet.
Round 2
They slug a little bit on the feet, then Perez goes for the take down and gets it. Perez takes the back and briefly locks up an armbar. Linares gets out. I thought it was going to be over.
Round 3
Perez is making adjustments and growing into the fight. Linares is throwing heat and gets taken down briefly. They bang on the feet for a while and Perez gets another takedown. Perez takes the back as the round ends. π© Linares wins by unanimous decision.
I don’t agree with the judges decision. I think Perez should have taken that. Both guys are very talented, but Perez was able to make changes on the fly; he realized that Linares’ boxing was better than his and he decided to work the grappling game, he also decided to play with angles and distance more, when he realized that his opponent had better striking than he did. I think that Perez won the last two rounds. Anyway, These two are both talent. Its a shame that they’re strawweights. -Get with some of that San Antonio Mexican food and move up a couple weight classes.
CJ Vergara was unbroken
